Infection Prevention Protocols: You will be required to comply with all infection prevention protocols that may be in place at the time of your visit. Protocols may include symptom pre-screening, wearing a medical grade mask for the duration of your visit, or maintaining distance between yourself and all others while in the Menno Place building.
What kind of resident will I meet with? Our goal is to provide the class with a full spectrum of the challenges that the aging population is facing – from dementia to loneliness to difficulty holding a complete conversation. You will not know who or what challenges your resident is facing until you meet them in person.

Park in any Visitor parking spot. If there isn’t one available, there is more parking in two lots on Brundige Ave. When exiting the Main Entrance lot, turn left onto Marshall Rd, left onto Primrose Street and left onto Brundige Ave. to find these two lots. One is a large lot by the Chapel and the other lot is at the very west (end) of Brundige Ave in front of Menno Home.
Do I need to pay for parking?
No, you will receive a complimentary parking pass from Garry Janzen to put on the dash of your car.

If you are parked in the alternate parking lots (north of the campus on Brundige Ave), please go to Menno Home reception for a complimentary parking pass. Reception is located at 32910 Brundige Ave – Entrance A. See map – CLICK HERE

What should I bring?

Can I take photos?
No photographs, video or audio of residents or the facilities. Our residents are protected by PIPA (Personal Information Protection Act) and FOIPPA (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). Under these agreements, residents expect that they will not be photographed. If you ABSOLUTELY want a photo, please ask Garry Janzen about it. He will make a decision. There is a photo permission form that needs to be signed by yourself and the resident. We will ask you to provide a hard-copy of the photo to the resident as well.
Can I pick a different time to meet than the ones listed above?
This is not our preference as it is complicated to arrange these meet-ups with residents – it involves many people, including care staff and administrative staff. If you absolutely cannot arrange your schedule to fit these times, you can ask for an alternate time, understanding that we may not be able to accommodate your request.
What do I say to a resident during the visit?
The resource materials listed on the web page above provide guidelines that you can use to form the conversation. This is NOT a therapeutic visit, but a friendly conversation. Do not employ any therapeutic techniques or measures.
Can I disclose about myself?
Yes! Consider this a friendship conversation, not a therapy session. You may share about who you are, why you are doing your degree, your faith, your experience with seniors, etc. As you do, ensure that the majority of the conversation is spent listening to THEIR stories and thoughts. If you are asked a question, respond. You may bring a musical instrument on your 2nd visit if that is appropriate in your estimation.
Should I exchange contact information with the resident?
No. It isn’t helpful for the resident to expect you to connect with them following this exercise. It is unrealistic for you to promise further connection.
Will there be an opportunity to provide feedback?
Following the immersion exercise, there will be an online feedback form that Menno Place will use to evaluate the effectiveness of the exercise and to make improvements as necessary. There is also a debrief.

Can I bring a gift?
You do not need to bring anything to the meet-up.
Can I send my paper(s) to Menno Place – or to the resident once I’ve written about my experience?
